Miss Maine USA Heather Elwell Q&A

By  |  7 Comments

Bio taken from the Official Miss Maine USA website:

Growing up, she spent most of her time on a boat with her family in West Bath, ME. Heather has a love for the outdoors and two of her favorite hobbies include fishing and hiking. When warm weather is not around, Heather can be found performing one of her seven instruments. She was chosen as one of seven flautists to attend Florida State University’s College of Music where she obtained two college degrees in Music and Economics. She was on the drumline and performed at all football games. As a musician, she has traveled to over seven countries and one of her best performances was on The Great Wall of China in Beijing. She now actively volunteers at the Children’s Hospital to perform music as a type of therapy to children with cancer. A friend of hers once said, “Music is what feelings sound like,” and she plans to make sure that those around her feel joy as she gives back through music.

1. Tell us how your life has changed since being crowned Miss Maine USA 2015. What has been the most rewarding experience so far?

My life has changed dramatically and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Every week I at least have two appearances as Miss Maine USA, and I’ve even had weekends that were filled with four or more! The most rewarding experience would is tied between my weekly visits to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital here in Portland, Maine where I play one of my musical instruments for the children and the Best Buddies Bike Ride Challenge I participated in back in May.

I rode twenty miles on a bike to help raise money for Best Buddies and even got to meet Tom Brady and other players from my favorite football team, The Patriots.

2. Describe to us your own personal style. Do you prefer to dress up or dress down? Heels or flats?

I prefer both! During the week I’m very casual and comfortable because I have a love for the outdoors. Hiking and Fishing are two of my favorite things to do here in Maine and both require a laid back wardrobe. However, I love getting super glam with full hair and makeup, even if it’s just going out to dinner with my friends. I have more heels than I know what to do with and instead of flats, I’m usually in cowboy boots or a pair of converse.

3. How do you define beauty?

Beauty is about the core. Growing up, I never thought I was a pretty face or would ever be a beauty queen. Once I came into my own skin and realized that I have the power to say and do things that bring happiness to others, that’s when I realized the beauty of life. Beauty is a feeling, not so much an adjective in my book.

4. What are the top 5 beauty products you cannot live without?

The top 5 beauty products that I can’t live without are my Anastasia Brow Pencil, iT Cosmetics CC cream, Image Skin Care Vitamin C moisturizer, MAC Whirl Lip Liner, and Coconut Oil.

5. What are your secrets to having those phenomenal abs and legs! Do you follow a specific diet? How often do you workout and what do your work outs consist of?

I follow a very healthy diet that includes a variety of foods in different food groups. I’m always getting in a ton of leafy greens, protein, healthy fats (coconut oil/avocado) and the right carbohydrates (starchy veggies, quinoa, brown rice). I workout 5-6 days a week and every day I am doing a new exercise. I either run, fast walk, walk with an incline, do a 20 minute full body circuit, swim, or a little bit of both. I also enjoy a good pilates or hot yoga class.

6. Did you enter in beauty pageants when you were younger or was Miss USA your first experience?

I started in beauty pageants when I was 17 because I had a few friends that entered local pageants in high school. Ever since my first competition I was hooked, because each time that I competed I learned more and more about myself. Self-discovery teaches you so much that will help you in the real world!

7. What songs can we find on your playlist right now? What are your top workout songs?

I’m really into The Weeknd right now, he has such a phenomenal voice. My top workout songs would have to be Britney Spears “Piece of Me”, it has been my jam for a long time. I also enjoy country, Brantley Gilbert and Jake Owen are my favorite country artists. My music is always changing depending on my mood and the weather.

8. Who inspires you the most?

James Gallway, a famous flautist, has been one of my role models since I was a child. I had the chance to watch him perform and then share his story of how he came from nothing and is now the world’s best flute player. Anything in life really is achievable, as long as you follow your heart. That’s one of the best lessons I have learned.

9. Where has been the most exciting place you have traveled?

Beijing, China – hands down. I had the opportunity to travel there for 14 days on a musical tour and I even performed on the Great Wall of China. The culture was so different and I will never forget my time in Asia.

10. Tell us something about yourself others would find shocking!

Most people are shocked when I tell them that I play seven different musical instruments! I’ve grown up around music and it was natural for me to keep picking up a new instrument each year of school. I can’t wait to figure out what my eighth instrument will be!
