What sparked your interest in pursuing a modeling career? How were you discovered?

Well my mom was a model and is now a photographer, and my dad has worked in the industry for over 20 years. When I was about eight, my little brother and I were signed with Ford in SF. At first I wanted nothing to do with it, witch seems crazy now because I love it so much. I’m not sure what made me change my mind, but I am thankful I did.

Do you have a signature scent? How would you say it relates to your personality?

Hmm, honestly I just spray whatever I have haha I usually have the Victoria secret sample sizes mists. I have yet to find a signature sent, yet I love my moms. (Tom Ford Black Orchid mixed with patchouli oil)

What are the top 5 makeup/skincare products you can’t live without?

The past year my skin hasn’t been the best. I’ve tried going vegan, proactive, chemical peels, and multiple other methods but nothing has seemed to work. I recently started using Kiels products and so far they have made the biggest difference. I wash my face twice a day with their “Blue Herbal Gel Cleanser” then apply their “Acne Blemish Control” to all affected areas. I always feel so much better when my skin is clear.

For makeup, I always love a good lip. My favorite right now is “KAT VON D Studded Kiss Lipstick”. They sell exclusively at Sephora and it lasts all day, I’m in love with the blood orange cause it’s a red but doesn’t make my teeth look yellow. I also love a good smokey eye.

Eye liner is a must. You will rarely see me without it (unless I’m on a shoot and have no say haha). Mac makes my favorite shadows but I love the “Urban Decay Smokey” Naked palette as well. I’ve always been a huge fan of NARS. I use the “Maui” blush stick mostly as blush but it doubles as a really great lip color. I know I’m only supposed to name 5 but a good highlighter really changes the game. My mom has one by “Anastasia Beverly Hills” and I steal it all the time (shhhh). Oh! One more thing. My absolute favorite foundation is “Koh Gen Do”, makes your skin super glowy and doesn’t cause breakouts. I found that it’s better to use a sponge over a brush when applying the foundation for more even coverage.

Do you have a certain diet or workout routine to stay in such great shape?

In the past I have been super obsessive about my diet and workouts. So much that it affected my social life. My friends would be annoyed cause all I wanted to do was hike or to the gym or take a class or go three days just drinking juice or whatever. The point is, it got to the point where thinking about my weight was consuming my life. I started to think, I’m too young to waste my life worrying about it this so much. Something needed to change. With that, I decided to take 3 months off and eat whatever I wanted, work out only when I felt like it (pretty much never). Thankfully it allowed me to break my obsession with being skinny, although if created a new problem for me. 3 months turned into 6 and I found myself neglecting my body. I would eat just because I could, not because I was hungry, binging everyday.

Again, finding myself very unhappy with my lifestyle and 10 pounds heavier, I decided it was inevitable that I find a balance. Not only for my career but for my well being. It was important to be happy and healthy, fit instead of skinny, and conscious instead of obsessed. Recently I seem to have found that balance. To jumpstart, I downloaded the “MyFitness Pal” app and started to count my calorie intake. I started taking 3 “Core Mocean” classes a week. It’s a workout combining cardio, Pilates, and strength training; although the the classes are only 45 minutes each, I leave with shaky muscles and dripping in sweat every time. On my off days, I go on hike with my friends (without running ahead of them and then getting mad at them for complaining), sometimes I play tennis (even though we can’t rally more than 10), or just dance around my room (my fav). If I choose not to workout one day, I don’t beat myself up over it. I’ve realized, I’m not training to be Victoria secret model, I’m only 16 and my body still has so many changes to go through. Although, I do plan on going to LA this February, and need to drop a few and tone up a bit, I vow to do it the right way. The healthy way.

What are some tips you can share for those who are interested in breaking into the modeling industry?

I’ve been modeling ever since I can remember. With a photographer as a mom, I’ve always been comfortable in front of the camera. Although, I have this advantage, Ive still worked really hard to get to where I am today. My advice for anyone starting out it to be patient. Since I was 13 (when I REALLY started), I have been on 1,000s of castings and out of those I have probably booked 100 jobs. Even if you live an hour away from the city (as I do), you should never miss a casting. Don’t lose hope, I find it ironic that most casting I leave thinking I definitely didn’t get, are the ones I usually end up booking.

You also have to remember that free tests are just as important as jobs. Yeah, you don’t get paid, but you get photos for your portfolio and you could potentially meet someone on set who thinks you’re perfect for another payed project they are working on in the future. My dad always taught me how important it is to treat modeling like a business, rather than a hobby, if you really want to be successful. It’s also important to remember that your agents are working with you, not against you, and communication with them is important. If you are going out of town, make sure you let them know, so they can book you out for those days. If you are on any shoot and somebody tells you to do something that makes you uncomfortable such as posing nude or even something you just don’t feel morally right about, don’t be afraid to say no.

You can always tell your agents, and they will make sure you never do anything you are uncomfortable with. Showing up on time (even better if your early) and with a smile on you’re face is not only a reflection of you, but your agency. You’re not always gonna love what you’re wearing, or be comfortable; actually a lot of the time your feet will be cramping and you will be freezing and exhausted; but that’s where you decide that you will have good attitude (and be thankful you have this opportunity), or be negative and bring the energy down. You’re energy is everything, even if you have the prettiest face and a perfect body, nobody will want to work with you if you’re complaining the whole time. You don’t have to be the loudest one in the room, or even an entertainer for that matter. Even if you are shy, it’s okay, try coming up with a few conversation starters to break the ice. A simple “how long have you been doing makeup?” or “what made you want to become a photographer?” may spark awesome conversation! I used to get so nervous going to shoots. Meeting a new group of people every time can be scary, but the more you practice the easier it will get. If you are old enough to go without you’re parents, I recommend doing so.

When my parents stopped going with me, that’s when I really gained my conversation skills, nobody was there to speak for me. As far as posing goes, as conceded as it sounds, I’ve spent many hours in the mirror learning my angles and studying different expressions figuring out what works and what doesn’t. One tip from my mom that I always keep in the back of my mind on shoots is to “stop modeling”. This may sound strange, but it makes so much sense. The shots between the shots, the ones where you aren’t “posing” are usually the best ones. They aren’t forced. She also told me to make every move intentional. For example, instead of just putting your hand on your head, run your fingers through your hair, follow through with the motion; make it real. Real always looks better. Another HUGE thing I wish I would of realized sooner is that “you are enough”. Just because you don’t book a casting, are told you need to lose weight, you get a pimple, doesn’t mean you are worth any less. There is a lot of criticism in this industry. There’s always gonna be someone taller, skinnier, tanner, clearer skinned, funnier, and more talented than you, but you are the only you. When I’m feeling down on myself I just remind myself that God made me me and “I am enough”.

What are some of your favorite songs right now? Do you have specific playlist for photo shoots?

I always have music playing. People are usually surprised in my taste in music. I’m living proof that listening to gangster rap doesn’t make you ghetto. As far as rappers go I’m into Tyga, Andre nickatina, and e40 right now. I also really like the weekend (but who doesn’t) and Justin Biebers new album, Purpose. But then theres times when im feelin country. My dream concert would be the civil wars. So bummed they broke up because they made such beautiful music. I saw the black keys at outside lands, loved them. Although when I’m on a shoot there’s no denying that Beyoncé Pandora radio will bring me out. Especially when they got the fan blowing my hair. Hahah so basically I like all genres of music. Overall just depends on my mood and who I’m with.

Describe your personal style. Do you prefer to dress up or down?

“I only wear black on days that end in -y” Yes, I’m one of those haha! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been called goth at school. My absolute favorite places to shop for clothes are thrift and consignment shops. The Salvation Army, crossroads, moon zoom, and even some good wills are some of my favs. I love being able to find pieces that nobody else has. I’m a sucker for cute workout clothes, I love lulu lemon and I wear a sports bra way to often. I’d describe my style at school as homeless, but when I go out I like to get dressed up.

What has been the most fulfilling experience so far in your career? Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on shoots?

Last summer I toured Europe for two weeks on a school trip. We started in England, then France and made our way to Spain. Spain was by far my favorite. The beaches were insane. It was an amazing experience and sparked my desire to travel. I appreciate the touristy things, but I like to go where the locals go. I like to experience the culture. My dream vacation right now is Bali. I’m currently trying to convince my mom to teach a workshop there next year so I can go with her. When I graduate high school I want be based out of LA. From there I would love to explore other markets such as Asia and Australia, although I’m down to go wherever. I can’t wait to see what the future holds and I am excited to see where it takes me!

It is admirable how she admits about skin issues and weight. Most models wouldn’t say that. She is going to be a good role model for young girls and adults as eell
